Make the right choice by placing patient safety first
In February we had an Australian gentleman (Thailand resident) who was traveling in the Philippines (Manila) when he got sick (Hypertension and Restless Leg Syndrome).
He contacted our Assistance team and provided a medical report, which indicated the gentleman had a pre-existing medical condition related to the current illness he was suffering from.
At that time the question was, considering his medical condition, did his treating doctor allow him to travel?
After many discussions with our Medical Director and considering the life threatening of the patient we decided to repatriate him to Bangkok.
It turned out that we made the right decision because when our nurse escort went to Manila to pick up the patient she had to stop at the airport clinic as the patient’s blood pressure increased and complained of chest pain.
He was sent to the airport clinic by wheelchair for which he was seen by a doctor and was given oxygen twice. After that the doctor and airline cleared him to fly for Thailand. During the flight, he was closely observed and monitored. His vital parameters were ok. The journey to Bangkok was uneventful as the patient remained stable throughout the flight.
Upon arrival in Thailand the patient was escorted to Pattaya where he lives and was admitted to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.
We closely monitored the patient even after he was discharged few days later.
This case is clearly a success not only because we do our job but mainly because we were able to make the right choice by placing patient safety first.
